“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

To remain yoked to the Sacred Heart daily requires perseverance, especially amid voices that champion self-sufficiency over surrender. True strength is found in remaining close to Him who has overcome the world.

The Imitation of Christ

For more than six centuries, Christians have turned to The Imitation of Christ for practical guidance in humility, perseverance, and devotion to Christ. Written by Thomas à Kempis in the early 1400s, it remains one of the most widely read Christian books ever published.

In a culture constantly searching for the newest idea, there is value in returning to works that have already stood the test of time. Investors understand this instinct. Rather than chasing every trend, wise stewardship often begins by asking what has proven durable across many seasons. The same can be true of our spiritual lives.

The Imitation of Christ has shaped generations of believers because it addresses enduring realities: pride, humility, suffering, obedience, and the pursuit of Christ. Six hundred years later, its counsel remains remarkably fresh.

A Quiet Campaign for the Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart of Jesus billboard reading Christ is King
A small group of Catholics in Northern Michigan is quietly expanding a public witness to the Sacred Heart of Jesus – one billboard at a time.

What began two years ago as a modest effort around Traverse City has grown into a regional campaign stretching across northwestern Michigan. The lay group, Friends of the Immaculata, has raised enough support – largely through anonymous donors – to place 14 Sacred Heart billboards across the region this month, more than quadrupling the number from previous years.

The group, made up primarily of parishioners from Holy Rosary Catholic Church, has worked parish to parish, spreading the word and inviting others to help reclaim June as the Month of the Sacred Heart. In previous years, donors funded three billboards in familiar locations around Traverse City. This year, the group expanded its fundraising to coincide with the USCCB consecration of the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

One member, Phil Nachazel, described the effort plainly: a public reminder “that Christ is King.” “In a culture that often feels untethered from that foundation,” he said, “we felt called to make a visible witness to the hope and stability found in Him.”

For organizers, the billboards are not political statements. They are invitations – brief encounters with a sacred image during the routines of daily life.

We hope people who see the Sacred Heart, even for a moment while driving, will be reminded of Christ’s presence and love.
PHIL NACHAZEL

The image itself is striking in its simplicity: the Sacred Heart of Jesus, recognizable to generations of Catholics, elevated above highways, small towns, and rural byways throughout the region.

As for the Friends of the Immaculata, the expansion from three billboards to fourteen is its own kind of proof. Even modest efforts – offered up – can travel farther than expected.

Humility

The humble heart is open to being taught, corrected, and guided by the Lord. Growth in virtue begins when we are willing to let Him lead through our daily trials and tribulations.
